How To Improve the Quality of Your Live Stream

Any viewing problem for your audience ends up being a problem for you! One survey showed that 62 % of viewers are likely to view an organization more negatively if they stream a poor quality webcast. Viewers don’t like to watch poor quality video. Bad quality reflects poorly on your organization. Fortunately for you, good quality will help mitigate many of those issues..

Here’s how we make sure that your your live stream quality meets the highest standards…

Before we get into how we improve quality, we need to define two different types of quality issues. There are those we can control, and those we cannot…

We can control the initial quality in, however, we have little to no control over the setup and equipment at viewer’s end. They may simply have a slow Internet connection, an outdated browser, poorly set browser security settings or an outdated computer with insufficient memory and there isn’t much we can do to help them with those issues.

But here’s what we can take care of…

Using the Best Camera & Equipment

Obviously, we do not use cell phone cameras or older models of consumer class camcorders. Older cameras may have low resolution and poor image processing and as the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out”. That’s especially true in low light situations. If your original video capture is poor quality, there is nothing you can do to fix it.

This is why we always use professional video cameras. Using a good quality camera will provide the best possible image at the very beginning of your broadcast. There’s no excuse for not using a full HD or 4K camcorder in 2019.

Clear Audio

George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, often said that when it came to an audience’s enjoyment of a film, audio accounted for at least 50% of the quality of any production. Viewers are far more likely to excuse poor video than they are to tolerate poor sound! This is especially true of business audiences, where listening to a speaker convey information, is somewhat more important than watching them speak.

To that end we always focus on providing the clearest audio possible. Typically we do this by patching into the venue’s PA system audio mixer, using a balanced, XLR cable connection. However, if that is unavailable, we use professional quality microphone(s) to capture the best possible sound, by locating them as close to the speaker as possible. These mics could be boundary microphones or wireless mics – handheld or Lavalier.
